Trever Patton, Ph.D., is a State of Kansas Licensed Psychologist and an independent practitioner at The Therapy Center. He is a unique specialist who works equally with patients and families for clinical therapy and as a neuropsychologist, assessing and defining brain deficits.
Dr. Patton performs neuropsychological and psychological assessments; ADHD/ADD evaluation in children and adults; mental status, cognitive, and personality assessments; law enforcement fitness for duty evaluations; and, disability determination evaluations. He treats adult brain trauma, cerebrovascular accidents, dementia, severe and persistent mental illness in adults and children, chronic depression and anxiety, OCD, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), and phobias. He also helps with marital and family psychotherapy, defiant and disruptive behavior in children and adolescents, and parenting, home structure, and behavior modification.
"This first piece in the process," explains Dr. Patton, "is helping people develop skills to deal with mental illness. Those skills may include identifying resources in the community, developing alternative behaviors, and finding ways to be more compliant with medical treatment. The other piece is helping people better recognize their strengths and restructure their lives around those strengths in order to overcome problem areas."
Dr. Patton struggled with family discord as a teenager. This history developed a compassion he now uses to identify with and help patients. Starting with a business degree, he worked as the Staff Supervisor and Business Manager for a Transitional Living Project for homeless youth. In this position, he worked regularly with these young people throughout his case load, and his compassion turned him from business to the field of psychology and mental health.
"Mental illness is very painful, and it is often difficult for the patient to understand how to cope. It affects more than just the individual but also family and friends. I realized I could help and wanted to help make a positive impact on people's lives. The reward is hearing patients say, 'I feel so much better, and now I can do so many things I didn't think I could do.'"
Dr. Patton recently moved back to his hometown of Wichita with his high school sweetheart - who is now his wife - and their three children.
